Biotic & Abiotic
Biotic - A biotic feature is something that is living. (plants, animals, things with living cells)
Abiotic - An abiotic feature is something that is and always has been non-living. (water, air, sun)
Biotic
Biotic features include the vegetation in and around the park and the native wildlife.
The Lady's Slipper (pictured above), is the most beautiful orchid in Europe. It is found throughout the park and other places in Croatia. This plant is biotic because it is living.
Abiotic
Abiotic features include the waterfalls, the lakes, the wooden bridges and the sunlight.
The Proscansko jezero (Crave Lake) is an example of an abiotic feature in Plitvice.
Proscansko jezero has a legend to tell. The Legend of the Black Queen, the legend on “prosnja” (praying the black Queen for water) says that the inhabitants of this region were craving for water and called upon the magic queen to help them, which she did. According to the legend, this is the reason why Proscansko jezero and the other lakes have emerged.
